PBOC USD/CNY fixing is expected at 6.8041, according to a Reuters estimate, ahead of the daily reference rate setting around 0115 GMT.
China uses a managed floating exchange rate system for the yuan. Under that system, the currency can trade within a set band around a daily midpoint from the People’s Bank of China. The current onshore band allows moves of 2% above or below the official midpoint.
Each trading day, the central bank sets that midpoint using several inputs. These include the prior session’s close, moves in major currencies, and wider foreign exchange conditions. It also considers domestic factors such as capital flows, growth momentum, and financial stability goals.
Why the PBOC USD/CNY Fixing Matters
The PBOC USD/CNY fixing is not a fully mechanical calculation. Instead, policymakers keep room to shape market expectations through the daily setting. As a result, traders watch the midpoint closely across Asian foreign exchange markets.
After the midpoint is published, onshore USD/CNY can trade within the allowed band. However, if the yuan nears either end of that range, the central bank may act to curb volatility. The source article said those steps can include buying or selling yuan, changing liquidity conditions, or guiding the market through state-owned banks.
Midpoint Seen as Policy Signal
Market participants often treat the daily fixing as more than a technical reference point. A stronger-than-expected yuan midpoint can signal that the PBOC is pushing back against depreciation pressure. Meanwhile, a weaker fixing can suggest tolerance for a softer currency.
The source article said the fixing gains more weight during periods of higher global volatility. It added that investors use the daily setting to gauge Beijing’s currency priorities, including competitiveness, capital stability, and confidence in financial markets.
