Tokyo Holiday Puts Yen on Intervention Watch

Forex24NewsBy Forex24NewsJuly 20, 2026No Comments2 Mins Read

Yen intervention watch intensified on Monday as USD/JPY traded near 162.50 with Tokyo markets closed for a public holiday. That setup put the pair back in a zone that has drawn Ministry of Finance action before. Meanwhile, thinner trading during a Japan holiday raised the risk of sharp moves in either direction.

Trading continued across Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. However, the absence of Tokyo desks usually leaves order books thinner than in a full local session. Traders therefore stayed alert for possible action or comments from Tokyo officials.

Yen Intervention Watch in Thin Trade

A quiet holiday session is the kind of backdrop Japan has used before when supporting the yen. Dealers watched the reduced market depth closely because any move in such conditions can have a bigger price effect. As a result, the market focused on volatility risk around the 162.50 area rather than on a clear direction.

The source article said Japanese authorities have acted in low-liquidity periods, including holidays, to increase the impact of intervention. That history kept traders cautious through the Asian session. Additionally, headline risk from Tokyo officials remained a key trigger for intraday swings.

Record Action Failed to Hold USDJPY

The current setup also echoed the conditions seen before Japan’s intervention in April and May this year. In that period, the Ministry of Finance spent a record ¥11.73 trillion in FX intervention. The article also said that sum was about $73.35 billion.

Authorities stepped in after USD/JPY moved above 160, a level the article described as politically sensitive. Yet the pair later climbed back above 160 within about six weeks. Because of that outcome, traders were likely to treat any fresh move with caution rather than assume a lasting turn in the trend.

With USD/JPY again well above 160 and Tokyo shut for the day, markets weighed the chance of verbal warnings or direct yen buying.
