French consumer confidence June showed a small improvement, but the reading remained well below the long-term average of 100.
The report also introduced a new measure. The French statistical office added a savings climate synthetic index. It tracks household saving behaviour and expectations. As a result, the office removed those saving-related items from the main consumer confidence index.
French Consumer Confidence June Stays Subdued
Despite the modest rise, the overall picture stayed weak. The source said the June estimate still sat far under the long-term average level. Meanwhile, the change in method means the main index now excludes views on current saving capacity, expected saving capacity, and the opportunity to save.
That new savings climate synthetic index now stands apart from the household confidence gauge. Therefore, the main confidence measure reflects a narrower set of household views than before. The source did not provide the headline index level in the text.
Unemployment Fears Rise in June
A more concerning detail came from job market expectations. Unemployment expectations edged higher again in June. The measure rose to 60 points, which marked the highest level since March 2021.
However, the report showed some relief on prices. The estimate for future inflation fell to -15 in June from +11 in May. Even so, that reading remained much higher than the -31 level recorded in February, before the Middle East conflict began.
