BBVA Visa AI payment marked a live test in Spain, where BBVA completed a transaction started by an artificial intelligence agent for a cardholder. The bank said the payment used real card details and passed through the systems of an active merchant. As a result, the test showed that AI agents can make purchases for cardholders on current payments rails.
The test formed part of live activity under Visa’s Visa Agentic Ready programme in Europe. Visa enabled the process through Visa Intelligent Commerce. Additionally, the setup used tokenisation and real-time fraud checks.
BBVA Visa AI Payment Uses Existing Tools
To meet European Union Strong Customer Authentication rules, the payment flow also used Visa Payment Passkeys. This biometric tool lets users approve online payments without passwords or SMS codes. Therefore, the test combined AI-led purchasing with user approval and security checks.
Roberto Pagán said BBVA is working on payment experiences that are smooth and dependable. He added that the work with Visa lets BBVA join the next phase of commerce. In that model, AI agents act for cardholders, while security and oversight stay in place.
Visa Shows AI Commerce in Paris
Eduardo Prieto said Visa’s focus is to keep each transaction secure, clear and trusted as AI agents play a bigger part in daily buying choices. Meanwhile, Visa presented the milestone at the Visa Payments Forum in Paris. Further demos at the event covered areas such as retail and travel.
Visa also said 62% of surveyed consumers in Spain already use AI tools to research products and compare prices.
