Citadel Crypto.com stake news led the market on Thursday after Citadel Securities invested $400 million in the exchange at a $20 billion valuation. The deal marks Crypto.com’s first institutional funding round in its ten-year history. It also gives Citadel Securities a stake in another major retail-focused crypto platform.
The investment came after Citadel Securities led an $800 million round in Kraken at a similar $20 billion valuation. As a result, the firm now holds stakes in two large exchanges that it does not control. The source said this expands Citadel Securities’ direct exposure to retail-facing crypto venues.
Citadel Crypto.com Stake Signals Shift
For years, Citadel Securities kept its distance from major crypto exchanges. The source said the firm cited regulatory uncertainty and preferred more controlled venues such as EDX Markets. However, that approach is changing as the U.S. regulatory backdrop becomes more supportive of digital assets.
Citadel Securities is now positioning for platforms that combine crypto, tokenised securities, derivatives and prediction markets. Meanwhile, exchanges that add more asset classes need deeper liquidity and tighter execution. The source said Citadel Securities already operates at scale in those areas in traditional markets.
Jim Esposito, President of Citadel Securities, said the link between traditional finance and digital asset infrastructure marks an important shift. He added that Crypto.com has built a base that can support further institutional growth in digital assets.
Crypto.com Expands Product Reach
For Crypto.com, the deal brings more than funding. It also adds institutional backing as the exchange expands into tokenised securities, derivatives and prediction markets. CEO Kris Marszalek described the size of that opportunity as staggering.
The investment also strengthens ties between a large market maker and a fast-growing retail exchange. Additionally, the source said Jane Street, DRW and Citadel Securities have each bought equity stakes in major digital asset venues. As a result, crypto liquidity is concentrating around a small group of well-capitalised market makers.
The source added that market makers, custodians and exchanges are becoming more closely linked as tokenised securities, crypto derivatives and prediction markets grow.
