German ifo business climate rose to 88.8 in August, beating the 87.2 forecast, while Germany’s final second-quarter GDP growth was revised higher.
Germany’s final Q2 GDP showed growth of 0.3% quarter on quarter. That was above the 0.2% preliminary reading. As a result, the data added to signs of firmer activity in the euro zone’s largest economy.
The Ifo business climate index also came in stronger than expected. The August reading jumped to 88.8, well above the 87.2 consensus estimate. Moreover, both the current conditions and expectations parts of the survey beat forecasts, pointing to better business confidence.
German Ifo Business Climate Signals Firmer Mood
The survey suggested that German activity is rebounding. Firms also grew more upbeat about the months ahead, despite geopolitical and energy-related uncertainty mentioned in the source report.
Meanwhile, France’s consumer confidence stayed weak in August. The index stood at 86, below the 87 expected by analysts. It also remained far under the long-term average of 100.
French households stayed pessimistic about the broader economic outlook. However, the stronger German figures stood out in the European morning session.
