PBOC USD/CNY fix is expected at 6.7382, according to a Reuters estimate, ahead of the daily midpoint due around 0115 GMT.
That level would sit below a neutral estimate of 6.7414. It would also come after the previous fix, even as the dollar index eased on Friday. Meanwhile, the onshore spot rate ended the session slightly firmer.
The source said the central bank may avoid tracking the softer dollar too closely. Instead, it may keep a close grip on the pace of yuan gains. As a result, the fixing could continue to signal a gradual path for the currency.
PBOC USD/CNY Fix in Focus
The report said the gap between the fix and market expectations could widen to about 500 pips from 480. If that happens, the midpoint would stand above Friday’s 42-month low of 6.7878. Therefore, the move would point to a controlled approach rather than a fast yuan rise.
The People’s Bank of China sets the daily USD/CNY reference rate each trading day. China uses a managed floating exchange rate system. Under that system, the yuan can trade 2% above or below the official midpoint during onshore hours.
Daily Midpoint Signals Policy Intent
The source said the PBOC uses several inputs when it sets the midpoint. These include the prior day’s close, moves in major currencies, wider FX conditions, and domestic factors such as capital flows, growth momentum, and financial stability goals. However, the process is not purely mechanical, which gives policymakers room to guide expectations.
Once the midpoint is published, onshore USD/CNY can move within the allowed band. If pressure pushes the yuan toward either end, the central bank may act to smooth swings. Additionally, it can use direct yuan buying or selling, liquidity changes, or guidance through state-owned banks.
Because of that, traders often read the daily fixing as a policy signal, not just a technical reference point.
